Shin splints are most commonly seen in runners. We will focus on treating the muscles that are being overloaded which causes the pain. Most of the time these are the anterior compartment muscles (mainly tibialis anterior) in the leg, but the posterior compartment muscles(tibialis posterior, flexor hallicus longus, flexor digitorum longus) can also create pain. While we treat the involved muscles, we examine the foot, ankle, knee and hips to try and find the root cause. Without removing the root cause, the patient will most likely experience similar issues down the road.
